I began coaching volleyball in the summer of 2007. My college coach Fred Chao was hosting a USA Volleyball High Performance Camp at George Mason, and I was lucky enough to secure a spot as a camp coach. With no prior coaching experience, I was able to learn from Fred, Paul Koncir & Gary Moore on how to run practices, lead big & small groups, and facilitate multi-session camps. This one camp began my passion for coaching and sent me on a nearly 20 year journey on the sidelines.
My love for the game of volleyball was fostered back home at York Volleyball Camp. Bruce and Barb Koller we're the former coaches Central York High School, winning 4 state titles and 4 runners-up, while running their wildly popular summer camp. Bruce & Barb retired before my time at Central, but in those summer camps I learned the skills, the strategies and had more fun playing volleyball than any other sport. I was a camper for 4 summers and then a coach for YVC from 2007-2012. Bruce and Barb no longer run the camp, but their lasting impact remains for myself and hundreds of other young volleyball players in the Mid-Atlantic. Ask me about Barb's game next time we're in the gym!
I've coached many USAV HP tryouts and several HP camps, getting to coach alongside the most experienced coaches within the national team's training system. I've spent time at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, and the Spire Institute in Geneva OH. I coached one summer with GMS in 2014, and coached camps in Alabama, Florida, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
While playing and after graduation from George Mason, I coached summer camps at George Mason on the men's side for Fred Chao & the women's side with Pat Kendrick. My former teammate Hudson Bates started the Men's Volleyball program at Marymount University, and I spent the summer of 2013 working both his camp, and the Pat Powers Camp. A true honor was being able to coach camps at the US Naval Academy, After moving to California, I was hired full time with Tstreet and ran many of their summer camps & clinics, while coaching Balboa Bay at the same time. In 2019 we moved up to Oregon, and I've been coaching summer camps NPJ ever since.
After graduation in 2011, I found marketing jobs in the Northern Virginia area, and continued to play & meet folks in the local community. Irv Rodriguez was growing the boy's program at NVAA, and offered me the 14's boys team in the fall of 2012. The kids had no idea how to play and definitely were not used to winning... and we took 2nd in our first ever tournament! We ended up taking 2nd at the NorthEast Bid tournament in my hometown, earning a bid to Nationals, and finishing 19th in 14 Open.
During my time at NVVA, I coached alongside Shawn Patchell, a longtime college, club and national team coach. When the season ended, Shawn offered me a job at the club he was moving to help run - Tstreet Volleyball Club in Irvine CA. Founded by Olympic Gold medal winning player and coach Troy Tanner, I officially began working there in September 2013. For the next 6 years, I coached 2 teams per season, and with Troy as my Assistant, won the club's first ever Gold Medal in New Orleans, LA in 2015. I coached all kinds of camps, ran Tweens and Beach, and was a member of the Coaching Board. I managed the website and did lots of design work for Tstreet, whom I'll always consider family.
When I knew I was moving to California in the fall of 2013, my college coach Fred Chao put out a call to Balboa Bay Director Travis Turner, who brought me in right away to coach teams. Having played against Balboa in the club days and knowing the storied history, I was honored just to be in the gym with some of the most legendary coaches in the game. As I proved myself, I was given the opportunity to coach the 17 Blue team with Andy Read, and then 18 Blue with Rocky Ciarelli (RIP). We won back to back National Championships, and then I followed that up with a Gold Medal in 2018 with my 17-2's What I am most proud of though, is rebranding the club in 2015 and utilizing social media to market and promote the club like never before. Balboa still uses some of my work to this day.
Upon moving to Oregon in 2019, I heavily pursued college coaching jobs. After many applications all over the Portland area, I was hired by Lois Vos at Multnomah University in May 2019 as the Head Coach. A small, private, Christian school, Multnomah competes in the very competitive Cascade Conference of the NAIA. I spent 3 seasons working to grow the program and improve the standings of the school, and learned a great deal about how to run a college program. I resigned after getting the NPJ Bend Assistant Director role in April of 2022.
As it became time to start a family, my wife and I decided to move to her family's home state of Oregon in February of 2019. While coaching my last tournament with Tstreet (and playing the final match against Jason Corwin's NPJ 18s team), I met NPJ Founder and Senior Director Adam Ellis at the Triple Crown in Kansas City. We moved from California as soon as the tournament ended, and I got right to work with NPJ upon arrival. After one season Assistant Coaching Salem 15 National, I took over the 16 National Head Coaching spot, culminating with a silver medal at Junior Nationals in 2022, the first ever National Championship match in the club's history. In April of 2022, we moved to Bend, and I was named the Bend Assistant Club Director shortly after. I was promoted to Bend Club Director in May of 2023, and I currently coach NPJ Bend 18 National while running Beach Club sand volleyball and running the NPJ Bend Beach Tournaments.
